Perception game notes

Flash Count: what this game measures

Flash Count briefly shows a field of sparks. You estimate the quantity after the image disappears, using the whole visual impression rather than counting one by one.

Signals tested

  • subitizing
  • visual short-term memory
  • quantity estimation under time pressure

How scoring works

The score is the difference between the actual spark count and the number you locked in after the flash.

Practice note

Read clusters and empty space first. Individual sparks vanish too quickly to count reliably on harder settings.

How to play

  1. Start the flash and read the whole field while it is visible.
  2. Use the estimate controls after the sparks disappear.
  3. Lock the count you remember from the brief image.

How to read the result

A small count error means the field stayed organized in visual memory. A large miss usually means clusters blended together or edge sparks were lost.

Accessibility note

The challenge is visual and brief. It can be played without sound, and results are reported as text after each estimate.
